Olympic Wrestler Accused of Poaching in Springs
An Olympic wrestler and Fort Carson soldier is accused of hunting a deer out-of-season at a car dealership in Colorado Springs.
The Gazette reports that 39-year-old Dremiel Byers was cited for several hunting and wildlife violations Thursday night after being found in a nearby parking lot.
A Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman, Abbie Walls, says someone reported seeing a wounded deer wandering around the area. Responding officers found a buck with an arrow in it and euthanized the animal.
Byers competed in Greco-Roman wrestling in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and is a 10-time U.S. nationals champion.
USA Wrestling spokesman Craig Sesker was shocked by the allegations and said Byers has a been a "great representative" of the sport.
Byers doesn't have a listed telephone number and couldn't be reached for comment.
