There was a tie for the gold in the women's downhill at the Olympics. Tina Maze (MAH'-zeh) of Slovenia and Dominique Gisin of Switzerland crossed the finish line with identical times. The bronze went to Gisin's teammate, Lara Gut.

On another warm day in the mountains outside of Sochi, Maze and Gisin finished the 1.69 mile course in 1 minute, 41.57 seconds. American Julia Mancuso was a disappointing eighth.

The last tie in Olympic Alpine skiing happened in men's super-G at the 1998 Nagano (nah-GUH'-noh) Games in Japan.

Elsewhere at the Sochi Games:

— The U.S. and Canada faced off in hockey today in a round robin game with the Canadians squeaking out a 3-2 victory. After a scoreless first period, the U.S. led 1-0 after two but was outscored 3-1 in the final stanza. The Canadian team is 3-0 entering the semifinals, while the U.S. is 2-1. These two clubs are favored to meet in the gold medal game.

— The best American finish in the Nordic combined individual normal hill event was 24th by Billy Demong of Park City, Utah. Fellow American Todd Lodwick (LOHD'-wihk), who carried the flag during the Opening Ceremony, pulled out after the first half of the event with an injured shoulder. Germany's Eric Frenzel was the winner.

— In women's snowboard halfpipe qualifying, American Kelly Clark had the best score after the first run to advance to the finals. She'll be joined in the final with, among others, the last two gold medal winners in the event, Australia's Torah Bright and Hannah Teter (TEE'-tur) of the U.S.

— The U.S. women's curling team is close to being eliminated. They were beaten by China today 7-4, which pretty much means they will need to win all five of their remaining round-robin games to stand a chance of reaching the semifinals.

— When the U.S. begins play in the men's hockey tournament later in the week, Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings will start the first game against Slovakia in goal. He got the nod over Ryan Miller and Jimmy Howard. Miller helped the Americans win silver and was the Most Valuable Player of the hockey tournament at the 2010 Olympics when Quick was the No. 3 goalie.

For the Canadians, Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens will start in goal against Norway on Thursday with Roberto Luongo getting the call on Friday against Austria.

— And in case you have been wondering what a gold medal is worth, it depends on what country you are from. A gold medal winner from Kazakhstan will get $250,000 from the homeland, while in the U.S. we are paying our gold medal winners $25,000. Some countries, like Norway, Britain and Sweden, still offer no prize for bringing home a medal.
