By mid-September, you should expect that there would be cooler temperatures and that wildfires that have been burning for months would be out.

You would be wrong on both counts.

Brand new to the list is the Ryan fire, which is burning in the Routt and Medicine Bow National Forests. As of Sunday, it had burned over 2,000 acres.

That fire and the Silver Creek fire are the two being monitored the closest right now. The Silver Creek fire began in July, but hot temperatures and almost no rain have made efforts there difficult. As of now, it is only 35% contained.

The hope for rain or any appreciable precipitation is not good, as there is no rain in the forecast for the immediate future. Because of this, more firefighters and personnel are located there to try and get as far ahead of the blaze as possible.

Overall, there are, in addition to those two fires, there are six others that are still burning. The Bull Draw fire, Cabin Lake fire, Cache Creek fire, Horse fire, Silver Creek fire, the Sugarloaf and Seaman fires.

It is hopeful that with cooler temperatures will come a reduced threat of wildfires. We will be watching.
