The women's top-seed in the U.S. Open starts play with a match this evening. Two-time defending champion Serena Williams opens play with fellow American Taylor Townsend. This is Townsend's third Grand Slam event, the first was this year's French Open. The 18-year old gained admittance to the Open as a wild card entry.

In play this afternoon, John Isner (IHZ'-nur) of the U.S., the 13th-seed, opens against fellow American Marcos Giron (hee-ROHN'), while in women's play No. 3 Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT'-oh-vuh) has a match against a player from France and eighth-seed Ana Ivanovic (ee-VAH'-noh-vich) is playing American Alison Riske.
