Playing indoors, because of the heat, defending champion Victoria Azarenka, the second seed, won her match.

Former No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee) advanced to the third round in the relatively comfortable confines of a roof-covered Rod Laver Arena, beating American Christina McHale 6-love, 1-6, 6-2

No. 11 Simona Halep (HAL'-ehp) had a 4-6, 6-love, 6-1 win over American Varvara Lepchenko.

No. 25 Alize Cornet of France sobbed on court after her draining 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Italian Camila Giorgi, which lasted 2 1/2 hours.

On the men's side, Roger Federer raced to a 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 win over Blaz Kavcic under the roof at Hisense Arena.

Top-seed Rafael Nadal had no trouble in a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over Australian wild-card entry Thanasi Kokkinakis under the roof on Rod Laver Arena.
