Recent exposure to Mercury at Chipeta Elementary School has resulted in the closing of the school today and tomorrow.

Exposure to mercury can cause serious health issues, especially in the very young and unborn.

The school was advised it should close by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and is being tested for mercury vapor by Grande River Environmental Services. Once they receive the results of the testing they can determine whether or not the school reopens.

Side effects of mercury exposure include vomiting, headaches, and in extreme cases, neurological issues have developed. While it is not known at this time how much mercury the students were exposed to, Mesa County School District is taking the proper precautions by closing the school.

If the tests come back with no further exposure expected Chipeta Elementary will reopen on Monday. If there is still a threat of exposure, the school will remain closed until it is cleared.
