According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the state is close to breaking a record, and it's the kind of record we don't want to set. Let's pause and reexamine a few safety measures.

Earlier today, August 4, 2020, Colorado Parks and Wildlife posted the following on their official Facebook page:

Listen up, Colorado. It's time for a renewed focus on safety when you're out recreating on bodies of water. Just this year, there have been 23 drownings in the state—one shy of the most-ever in a single year.

CPW also shared a video hosted by Grant Brown, their Boating Safety Program Manager, discussing safety equipment you should have on hand, as well as other safety tips to know.

Pay particular attention to the video at 1:16. The speaker makes an excellent point. People can be overconfident when it comes to their swimming abilities. Like Mr. Brown says, "You're a good swimmer when you're expecting to go for a swim... not when your craft gets capsized and you're upside down in the water or find yourself in trouble."

It's barely August and our incredible state of Colorado is only one tragedy away from setting a terrible record. With all the closures Coloradans are anxiously trying to get outside and enjoy the state's natural attractions. Let's make the most of the summer, but practice as much safety and courtesy as possible.
