Here's something I bet you never thought you would see at the class reunion for the graduates of 1958. Could this be the best note in the history of Grand Junction?

Last Saturday, August 25, Western Colorado's Swing City Express, a 14-piece big band based out of Grand Junction, played the 60th class reunion for Grand Junction High School's 1958 graduates.

It didn't take long before the band realized the patrons weren't hugely interested in listening to Big Band music. After the fourth or fifth tune, one of the members of the audience presented the band with the note you see above.

Does the Class of 1958 really want to hear Zepplin'? Perhaps a little Clapton? Speaking as a fellow Grand Junction High School graduate (class of '88), my estimates place the youngest member of the audience somewhere around 78 years old.

Let's take a quick look back at the music charts of 1958. According to Billboard.com, the biggest hits of 1958 included:

  • Poor Little Fool - Ricky Nelson
  • Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volaré) - Domenico Modugno
  • Little Star - The Elegants
  • It's All In The Game - Tommy Edwards
  • It's Only Make Believe - Conway Twitty
  • To Know Him, Is To Love Him - The Teddy Bears
  • The Chipmunk Song - The Chipmunks With David Seville

What are the odds Grand Junction's Swing City Express could have knocked out "The Chipmunk Song"? My guess is they wouldn't play it, even with guns to their heads.

In any case, it was an awesome event. The GJHS Class of 1958 was a hoot. The band had a great time. I can only speak for myself, but I got a kick out of the note. Next time we'll whip up some Conway and a tune or two from The Teddy Bears.
