[UPDATE September 17] The Mesa County Coroner’s report says the shooting victim is 26-year-old Brandon Sanchez. The Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is active and ongoing.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting in the 3100 block of Chipeta Avenue just before 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 16. The gunshot victim, a 26-year-old male, died as a result of the shooting.

In an event related to the shooting, a 27-year-old male received serious injuries during an assault and was taken to the hospital for treatment. His injuries are reported to be non-life threatening.

Law enforcement detained and questioned witnesses and determined the shooting and assault to be an isolated incident with no threat to the public. The names of the two victims have not been publicly released and investigators are still gathering information about what led to the shooting and assault.
