Sometimes you need to get in touch with your inner geek. When this urge hits, where are you most likely to find it in Grand Junction?

To geek or not to geek, this is NOT the question. We all have an inner nerd. As a matter of fact, this Thursday, July 13, is National Embrace Your Inner Geek Day. See, people all over the country do it.

Before we go too far, and before anybody gets their feelings hurt, let's explore what it means to be a geek. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a geek is defined as:

Geek - noun

  1. A carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake.
  2. A person of an intellectual bent who is disliked.
  3. An enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity

Okay, so the first two definitions aren't exactly flattering. For our purposes today, it's the third definition we're interested in.

Is geekiness something you should be ashamed of? Not at all. Lifehacker put together a list of three great things about being a geek. The list includes:

  • Geeks know the value of curiosity.
  • Geeks work hard to solve real-world problems.
  • Geeks recognize the value and limits of perfection.

Did you hear that? Perfection! So, let's be geeks. No all we have to do is find out where.

1. Best Buy

I recently purchased a new computer at Best Buy. They have their own crew of helpers called "The Geek Squad." In addition to computers, TV's, and stereos, they have a wide selection of the latest games and remote controlled toys.

2. Hobby Hut Models

I've worn out my welcome at this place. In addition to Star Trek collectibles, I've purchased a number of RC airplanes for my dad.

4. The Jester's Court

I do almost all of my Christmas shopping here. They offer a wide variety of games and gaming supplies, including figurines and accessories.

5. Sherwood Park

You'll see fascinating things at Sherwood Park. From time to time the park hosts "warriors" armed with foam rubber swords and cardboard shields. I'm not entirely sure how you join this group but is seems the more the merrier.

Honorable Mention: Waylon's House

My place gets a few points due to the excellent collection of Star Trek DVDs and $3 bottles of wine. Both stand strong on their own merits. Put them together, and well, you know.

Let's celebrate those things in life which are a little more, shall we say, cerebral. Get out and enjoy "Embrace Your Inner Geek Day." I do... every day.
