Some people do and some people don't. Some people will and some people won't.

It's very surprising to me how divided Grand Junction is on the subject of using self-checkout. I expected a majority of people would be in favor of it, but in my recent Facebook poll that just wasn't the case.

The fact is, the comments were very evenly split between those who love self-checkout and those that absolutely loathe it. There were a few who really didn't have strong feelings either way.

There were plenty of folks who had similar feelings to Wendy's, the thinking being that using self-checkout is taking away jobs. That may or may not be true, but I feel like the self-checkout line is going to exist whether I use it or not. Besides, there usually is at least one, if not two store employees monitoring the self-checkout area and providing assistance to customers in need.

Nothing wrong with Al's point at all, and his feelings are shared by plenty of others. I guess my feeling is that as a paying customer, the store is actually doing me a favor by giving me the opportunity to check out as quickly as possible - and I appreciate it.

I really love Donna's point. Using self-checkout can actually be helpful to the checkers who may be dealing with long lines and feeling the pressure of trying to move people through quickly. And it allows those that have just a few items to get out quickly.

For me, that's the biggest thing. Time. There never seems to be enough of it. If I can save myself 5 or 10 minutes, it's worth it. I rarely have more than a dozen items and so I can get in, get out, and move on to the next thing on the schedule. For me, it's all about customer service and a great option for those that want to use it.

On the rare occasion when I have a cart full of groceries, I'm using regular checkout. I'm never going to be the guy who takes a full cart through self-checkout and spends 15 minutes scanning all of his items. Why would you do that?

Please feel free to weigh in on the Facebook discussion. We aren't through with this yet. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
