Call it karma, bad luck, miscalculation or something else, but a portion of the old Grand Avenue bridge in Glenwood Springs collapsed.

Motorists in Glenwood Springs have been enduring gridlock this week navigating the detours while work on the new bridge is being completed now wonder if the collapse will delay the new bridge project

The old bridge, built in 1953, was being dismantled to make way for a new bridge currently under construction.

During the dismantling process on Tuesday (August 15) a portion of the old bridge unexpectedly collapsed littering the railroad tracks below with steel beams.

No one was injured during the collapse, nor did any debris end up in the Colorado River. After determining there was no other danger from the bridge, crews began cutting apart the steel beams to clear the railroad tracks.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says the new bridge from Interstate 70 into Glenwood Springs is expected to be completed sometime in November. It's unknown how much, if any, the old bridge collapse will affect work on the new bridge.
