As the Colorado Mesa Women's basketball team leaves town this week headed for New Mexico, they are in first place in the RMAC. They are hoping that hasn't changed by the time they get back to Grand Junction.

The Mavericks are coming off a dramatic overtime win over Black Hills State, and a come from behind win over Chadron State and have moved back into first place in the RMAC standings, thanks in part to last week's UCCS loss to CSU- Pueblo.  The Mavs are at 14-3, while UCCS sits at 13-3. Unfortunately, the Mavs don't necessarily control their own destiny, since the conference champion would be determined by a point system in the event they finish with the same record as the Mountain Lions.

Consequently, the Mavericks are only concerned with what they do on the court this weekend against New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico. Back in December, the Mavs beat Highlands 83-55, and knocked off Western New Mexico in a close one 76-66. While Highlands is out of playoff contention, the Mustangs are currently tied with Metro State  at 9-8 for the 8th and final playoff spot. Saturday's game in particular should be extremely competitive - and could go either way.

Meanwhile, the Maverick men find themselves in 6th place, two games behind Fort Lewis for the coveted #4 spot in the RMAC tournament. The Mavs are coming off a double-win weekend with a 34-point win over Chadron State and an overtime win over Black Hills State. The Mavs rallied from 28 down in the second half to force overtime and defeat the Yellowjackets.

The Mavericks will be at Western State next Saturday, and then close out the regular season the following weekend against Fort Lewis and Adams State.
