Colorado State University's president is recommending the school build a new sports stadium on campus instead of renovating the existing football arena west of the school.

University President Tony Frank announced his suggestion Saturday in a memo to the school's Board of Governors.

That panel will discuss the issue at a meeting on Friday.

Frank said a new stadium could cost from $195 million $225 million, depending on seating capacity.

The university has said it would cost at least $36 million to maintain the existing Hughes Stadium for 10 years and at least $149 million to renovate it to last 30 to 40 years.

Opponents say building an on-campus stadium would hurt local businesses and residential neighborhoods.

Frank's memo was posted on the university website.
