A popular ski town and the surrounding area in Colorado produces twice the garbage as the average American. We're really not surprised with who it is.

According to the Aspen Daily News, a study that ran last July and October by the city of Aspen and Pitkin County discovered the average county resident discarded 9.1 pounds of trash a day. Compared to the national average of 4.5 pounds per day.

Liz O’Connell, senior environmental health specialist for the city stated:

“It is important for us to know what items people are disposing of that could be recycled or composted. When all waste gets buried in the landfill, it’s a lost opportunity to conserve resources and shortens the estimated 15 years left before the landfill is full.”

City and county officials are planning a public meeting to discuss some of the options to prolong the life of the landfill, and better divert compostables and recyclables.

A meeting for Aspen residents is scheduled for Wednesday, February 3, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Sister Cities room at City Hall.

For Pitkin County residents, the meeting also takes place on February 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the community room at the Basalt Regional Public Library.
