The victim of an accident that left a truck submerged upside down in a Fruita canal on Thursday has been identified.

Authorities responded to a call around 1 p.m. on Thursday (September 13) about a truck upside down in the canal at 19 Road. Law enforcement and emergency personnel who responded found a deceased male inside the truck. That man has now been identified as 66-year-old Roy Lyons of Palisade.

An investigation into the crash and an autopsy performed by the Mesa County Coroner's Office reported Lyons was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash.

The coroner's report indicated Lyons had heart disease and significant health issues which were confirmed by medical records. The coroner believes a medical event caused Lyons to leave the road and crash into the canal.
