We are smack dab in the middle of summer, but school bells are ringing and stores are filled with back-to-school shoppers. Parents may be wondering what school supplies their kids will need this year - and regardless of the grade - the list is probably long.

Obviously, times have changed since we were kids and so has the list of supplies kids need for school. What I recall about the early days of school is needing a couple of #2 pencils, an eraser, a three-ring binder, some loose-leaf paper, maybe a ruler, and crayons.

While each school and each grade are a bit different, here's an example of what a first grader needs at Chatfield Elementary.

  • Two Packages of Copy Paper
  • One Large Box of Kleenex
  • Two Packages of Crayons
  • 36 USA #2 Pencils
  • 10 Glue Sticks
  • One Fiskar Scissors
  • One Set of Water Colors
  • One Package Expo Dry Erase Markers
  • One Package Crayola Markers
  • One Container Clorox Wipes
  • Three Plastic Folders - 3-prong (blue,yellow, green)
  • Ziploc Bags - Boys - One Box Gallon Bags
Girls -  One Box Quart Bags
  • One Back Pack - No Wheels

So, we can see, times have definitely changed. And, imagine the people that have more than one kid in school. Wow! The cost adds up in a hurry, that's for sure.

Mesa County School District has made it easy for parents by posting a school supplies list for each grade and school on the district's website. You will find each school listed, and then each school broken down by grade.
