Former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz celebrated his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame this past weekend, where he earned a spot alongside former teammates Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux.
For those of us who watched him do it on television, it doesn't seem possible that it was 40 years ago tonight that Atlanta's Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's career home run record. The number 714 was magical as it reflected the number of home runs Ruth had hit in his amazing career. For decades it was widely believed nobody would ever break the mark.
The Atlanta Braves have agreed to a $42 million, four-year contract with All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel, avoiding arbitration with the 25-year old. The Braves also hold a $13 million option for 2018 with a $1 million buyout.
Jim Fregosi (freh-GOH'-see), a former All-Star who won more than 1,000 games as a manager for four teams, has died after an apparent stroke. He was 71.
