No. 1 seeds Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic (JOH'-koh-vihch) have moved into the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Williams rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kaia Kanepi (KY'-ah KAH'-neh-pee) to reach a grand slam quarterfinal for the first time since winning last year's U.S. Open. Williams will next take on Flavia Pennetta, who also scored a straight set win in her fourth round match.

Djokovic reached the quarterfinals for the eighth year in a row and 22nd consecutive Grand Slam tournament overall. The 2011 champ made only 19 unforced errors in a 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Eighth seed Andy Murray needed 2 hours, 35 minutes to defeat No. 9 Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (joh-WIHL'-freed SAHNG'-guh) 7-5, 7-5, 6-4.

Third seed Stan Wawrinka (vahv-RIHN'-kah) earned a quarterfinal berth with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 victory over No. 16 Tommy Robredo (roh-BRAY'-doh).

Women's No. 17 seed Ekaterina Makarova pulled off the day's biggest surprised by ousting seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard (yoo-JEE'-nee boo-SHAHRD'), 7-6, 6-4. Bouchard received a medical timeout for a heat illness during the second set amid temperatures in the mid-80s on a muggy day at Flushing Meadows.

Bouchard's ouster leaves Williams and No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee) as the only top-10 seeds to reach the quarters.

No. 17 Victoria Azarenka had to rally to get into the quarterfinals, outlasting Aleksandra Krunic (KROO'-nihch) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Japan's Kei Nishikori rallied for a five-set victory over fifth-seeded Milos Raonic to reach his first U.S. Open quarterfinal. The 10th-seeded Nishikori won 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4 in a match that ended at 2:26 a.m. Tuesday, tying the latest finish in tournament history.
