It's the largest self-built castle in the United States and Colorado's Bishop Castle continues to grow and it's a great Colorado destination.

It started out as a one-room stone cottage back in 1969. Over the years, Jim Bishop continued to add to the structure little by little. Bishop Castle is 16 stories high, has three cathedral windows, wrought iron walkways, and a steel fire-breathing dragon. Of course, we can't help but wonder if there is a moat, a dungeon, and scores of hidden passageways.

Today, Jim Bishop is still building and adding to the castle. Visitors are invited to tour the castle free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There's a gift shop that is open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM until 6 PM. By the way, it's a great place for a wedding.

Bishop Castle is located near Rye, Colorado. If you want to go, from Interstate 25 you turn onto Highway 165 going through Rye, approximately 25 miles to Bishop Castle.
