The first England women's game at the new Wembley Stadium was spoiled by Germany, with the European champions sweeping to a 3-0 victory in the landmark friendly on Sunday.

Building on a steady but growing interest in women's sport here after the 2012 London Olympics, all 55,000 tickets were sold, although around 10,000 fans didn't turn up amid bad weather and local transport closures.

It was still a record attendance for an England women's team on home soil. But the players' performance didn't live up to the occasion.

Just like in their previous 19 meetings, England failed to beat Germany.

Alex Scott scored an own goal after six minutes, and Okoyino da Mbabi scored twice before halftime to show why the Germans are among next year's World Cup favorites.
