New Jersey Sports Gambling Suit Tab: $2.8M and Rising
New Jersey's bid to bring legalized sports gambling to the state has met with defeat in the courts, but there's been one big winner so far.
That would be the law firm hired to help Gov. Chris Christie defend a lawsuit by the four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA.
Figures obtained by The Associated Press show Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher has charged the state $2.8 million from August 2012 through the end of 2013. Taxpayers will be on the hook for more when other attorneys' fees are included.
Gibson Dunn is the same firm Christie hired at taxpayer expense to investigate the lane-closing scandal at the George Washington Bridge.
Neither a Christie spokesman nor the law firm responded to requests for comment by The Associated Press.
