Krakow's mayor says the city is withdrawing its bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics after residents voted overwhelmingly against the plan in a referendum.

Almost 70 percent of voters in the Polish city opted against hosting the games in the poll on Sunday. The turnout was nearly 36 percent, enough to make the vote valid.

Krakow Mayor Jacek Majchrowski said Monday that he will inform the International Olympic Committee he's withdrawing the city's bid.

Krakow proposed to host the games together with neighboring Slovakia. The other bidding cities for the 2022 games are Almaty, Kazakhstan; Lviv, Ukraine; Beijing and Oslo.

The IOC will choose the host city on July 31, 2015, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
