A federal judge in Chicago is considering preliminary approval of a $75 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit brought against the NCAA by former football players and other athletes who say the organization didn't protect them enough from concussions suffered in college.

At the beginning of Thursday's hearing, U.S. District Judge John Lee said he had various concerns he wanted to go through about the terms and scope of the proposed settlement.

The deal calls for the NCAA to toughen return-to-play rules. It also would create a $70 million medical fund to test current and former athletes for brain trauma. The NCAA would also set aside $5 million for concussion research.
