It doesn't happen often, but there is a way you can visit Western Colorado museums for free this month.

May is National Museum Month and the Museums of Western Colorado facilities are offering some free days during the month for people to enjoy.

The first free day is Saturday, May 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Cross Orchards Historic Site at 3073 F Road in Grand Junction. Highlights of the day include rides on the kids' train, a chautauqua presentation, and a side saddle demonstration by the Frontier Belles. The Frontier Bells is a horseback riding performance group that has been performing since 1958.

Other free days are coming up later in the month. There will be a free day at the Museum of the West in downtown Grand Junction on Saturday, May 13, and a free day at Dinosaur Journey in Fruita on Friday, May 19.

Mesa County is fortunate to have such high-quality facilities that showcase both the modern and pre-historic history of Western Colorado. This is a great opportunity to learn about local history and to provide a fun learning experience for kids.

Too many people have lived in the Grand Valley for a long time but have never visited our local museums. Don't be one of those people. Carve out a little time on one or more of these days and experience western Colorado in a new way.
