For kids to have the best chance at success in the new school year, it's imperative parents know how to make sure their kids get enough sleep for back to school.

August 16 is the first day of school in Mesa County, and so there is still time for parents to acclimate their kids to the new routine back to school brings.

The experts at National Jewish Health recommend parents start resetting the children's sleep schedule at least two weeks before school starts. Back to school generally means kids are getting to bed earlier, but also getting up earlier so it's a good idea to prepare them ahead of time.

They suggest moving your child's bed time a little earlier each night leading up to the first day of school, and gradually waking them up a little earlier. That way, when the first day of school arrives, the kids have already made the adjustment.

Here are three suggestions for better sleep habits in kids from National Jewish Health.

  • Give your child time to relax and wind down before bedtime by turning off all electronics at least 30 minutes before bed time. Story time for young children and reading for older kids is an ideal way to unwind.
  • Create a good sleeping environment in your child's bedroom by keeping it cool, dark, and comfortable.
  • Technology such as TVs, cell phones, computers, and video games are best if kept out of the bedroom and set up in a different area.
