Sunday (August 7) marks the 71st anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Grand Junction residents are invited to bring their bicycles to the 'Bike Around the Bomb' event.

The rally hosted by local Global Zero activists is designed to bring awareness of the destructive nature of even a small nuclear bomb by bicycling around a seven-mile area in Grand Junction that would be destroyed by that bomb.

The Grand Junction event is part of a global day of action with events taking place at 24 locations around the world including 16 in the US.

This is Global Zero's third annual Bike Around the Bomb event. Global Zero Executive Director Derek Johnson says,

We're mobilizing this weekend to make sure the Democratic and Republican nominees understand the only way to ensure these weapons are never used again is to eliminate all of them, everywhere. The next American president has to put that objective at the top of the foreign policy agenda."

The Grand Junction rally will be on Sunday (August 7) at 9 a.m. at the Old Mesa County Courthouse, 544 Rood Avenue. Participants are invited to register in advance for the event.
