Pets across the state of Colorado will be receiving free exams and check-ups this weekend, but not in Grand Junction.

The Colorado Veterinary Medical Association is teaming up with Denver's 9NEWS and more than 50 veterinary clinics across the state to provide the free exams on April 7 and 8. The exams are targeted to individuals with low or restricted income, and those who are unemployed.

Glenwood Springs, Delta, and Gunnison are the only western slope towns with participating clinics. Low-income pet owners in those communities can find more information from the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association.

Of course, pet ownership requires responsibility regardless of the owner's income. Our pets can't take care of themselves.

While it would be completely unreasonable to expect veterinarians to provide on-going free pet care to people who can't afford it, it certainly is commendable of those vets in Colorado who are participating in this two-day clinic.

If we hear of any veterinarians in the Grand Valley that are participating in the pet check weekend, we'll let you know.
