Colorado Parks and Wildlife are offering youth who want to learn to hunt the opportunity. Plus, the kids get to use that knowledge and training in the field on a mentored hunt.

The Youth Hunter Outreach Program is designed to teach kids 12-17 years old the proper use of a firearm for hunting, wildlife biology and habitats, tactics for a successful hunt, and the importance of wildlife management.

The next Hunter Outreach Program is April 8-9 and will include a turkey hunt on private land near Meeker.

Youth interested in the Outreach Program must have a valid Hunter Safety Card. Registration also requires the applicant to submit a handwritten essay of 500 words or less about why he or she should be chosen for the program.

Ideas for the essay include explaining the youth's lack of hunting experience, reasons they haven't been able to hunt, and why they want to participate in in the program.

In addition to the essay, the application should include the youth's name, address, and Hunter Education card number. Parent or guardian's contact information, including email address and phone number, must be included.

Application deadline is March 25. Applications should be mailed to DWM Bailey Franklin, PO Box 1181, Meeker, Colorado 81641.

CPW will select three applicants for the April program and will supply the shotguns, ammunition, and blinds for the hunt. Participants need to have camouflage clothing, lodging, and food for the two days.

Additional Information about the CPW Youth Hunter Outreach Program application process is available on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website or by calling 970-878-6090.
