Both Colorado Mesa University basketball teams are off to great starts and look to finish 2014 strong with road games this weekend against Adams State and Fort Lewis. The CMU men are 8-2 on the season, and 3-1 in the RMAC after a weekend sweep of Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands.

Junior Ryan Stephan leads the Mavericks with 24 points and nearly 8 rebounds per game. He's second in the conference in scoring and 6th in rebounding.

Senior Jerry Duckworth has been huge coming off the bench averaging 13 points per game, and leads the team with 67 three-point field goals. He's second in the conference in three- pointers made.

If not for such a poor shooting night in the conference opener against Chadron State, the Mavs would be 4-0 in the conference along with UCCS, Colorado Mines, and Colorado Christian. The Mavs have been without starter Joe Kiely for the last six games because of a foot injury, and hope to get him back after the Christmas break.

The CMU women are 6-2 overall, and 3-1 in conference play, their lone conference defeat coming in double overtime against Black Hills State.

Sophomore Erin Reichle leads the Mavericks in scoring, averaging 19.6 points per game. Senior Leanda Gilbert is averaging nearly 11 points per game to go along with 8 rebounds.

The Mavericks have been hit hard with injuries, including  redshirt freshman Kerstin Strong, who is done for the year after starting the first four games of the season. Junior Erika Musante has stepped in to the starting role and is averaging seven points and 6 rebounds per game.

Another starter, junior Siu Lo'amanu has missed the last two games with a deep thigh bruise and is doubtful for this weekend's games.

The Mavericks are currently tied with UCCS and Black Hills State in the conference standings behind 4-0 CSU Pueblo.

The Mavericks take on Fort Lewis Saturday beginning at 5:30, and Adams State beginning at 3:00pm. You can catch all of the action on ESPN 1230.
