Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper has issued a declaration recognizing the state's military veterans by making November 'Hire a Veteran First Month'.

With Veterans Day on November 11, the governor and the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment felt this was an ideal time to recognize and assist Colorado veterans searching for or wanting to change employment.

In addition to job fairs at various locations around the state, the Department of Labor has also launched the website Hire a Colorado Vet to help veterans and employers by making resources available online.

Department of Labor and Employment Executive Director Ellen Golombek says,

Whether our services are delivered face-to-face or online, we are proud of our long-standing commitment to the men and women of the Armed Forces. Our approach is veterans helping veterans."

In the last 12 months, 26,945 veterans received services through their local Workforce Center, many with Veterans Employment Specialists, including those on the Western Slope. Several of these services can also be used by active and reserve military.

Grand Junction is also holding a drive-through flu shot clinic for veterans at the VA Medical Center on Saturday, November 5, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The vaccine is free to veterans who provide proof of military service or are enrolled in the Grand Junction Veterans Health Care System.
