The Colorado Mesa Mavericks are vying for their 6th win of the season  Saturday night when they host the Ft. Lewis Skyhawks for homecoming.

The Mavericks are coming off a 45-35 win over Western New Mexico, their third straight win to improve to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the RMAC. The Mavericks are currently tied with CSU Pueblo for second place behind Colorado Mines, which enters the weekend 5-0 in conference play. The Orediggers will take on CSU Pueblo on Saturday.

So, aside from the fact that it's homecoming weekend, it's a big game for Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks haven't won 6 games in a season since going 6-5 in the 2008 season. Granted, this Maverick coaching staff and players have their sights set much higher than six win, but Mavericks fans certainly would love to see a winning season.

The Mavericks have had the Skyhawks number in recent years having won seven consecutive games in the series, led by the Mavs 29-10-1.

Nothing is easy in the RMAC. Ft. Lewis is 2-5 overall, and 1-4 in the RMAC, but that one conference came against CSU- Pueblo, which hadn't lost a conference game in three years. It's unlikely the Mavericks will be looking past the Skyhawks toward next week's showdown with Colorado Mines.

Mavericks freshman quarterback Andrew Cota gets his fourth start of the season, after passing for more than 200  yards in three consecutive games. The Mavericks are averaging 41 points per game the last three weeks in winning three straight.

Defensively, the Mavericks lead the conference in interceptions with 13 - that's good for 8th in the nation. The Mavericks are second in the nation with 7 blocked kicks, and are averaging nearly 2.5 sacks per game.

The Mavericks should have plenty of motivation this week as they take on Fort Lewis at Stocker Stadium. Kick off is set for 7:00pm with coverage beginning at 6:30pm on ESPN Radio 1230.
