“A Christmas Story” Hits the Big Screen in Grand Junction

If you love holiday movies, you should love the fact that “A Christmas Story” is hitting the big screen in Grand Junction.

Sure the 1983 classic will likely be playing for 24 hours straight on television on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but it won’t be as good as seeing it on the big screen.

For anyone who doesn’t know the story of Ralphie and his quest for a Daisy Red Rider BB Gun, and his father’s obsession with a leg lamp, all you need to know is that this is a classic. It has received recognition as the best Christmas movie of all time.

I don’t remember exactly when I saw “A Christmas Story” for the first time, but I know it was several years after it initially came out in theaters. In fact, not many people saw it in the theater, when it was released around Thanksgiving of 1983. It was not a big box office hit by any means.

But, it’s been on television every year since 1985, growing a cult following and the appreciation of old and young viewers alike. It’s definitely not a kids┬ámovie, but, it is rated PG, and I would think that ages 10 and up would be able to fully appreciate it. If nothing else it should teach kids not to stick their tongue to a frozen flagpole.

This is another one of the Dinner and a Movie presentations at the Avalon Theater on Tuesday, December 12. Eat or shop downtown that day, bring your receipt and you get a free admission for every $5 you spent. Otherwise, admission is $7 and the movie begins at 7:30 pm.

By the way, I went to the “Wizard of Oz” presentation at the Avalon Theater, and surprisingly to me, there were hundreds of people in attendance. The same is likely to be true for this one so come early so you have plenty of time to get your popcorn. Just so you know, the concession process at the Avalon will be notably slower than what you may be used to.
