In case you hadn't noticed, let me tell you Halloween candy is a lot more expensive than it used to be.

Of course, we have the Halloween grinches who turn their porch light off on Halloween night and make their house as dark as possible so that no trick-or-treaters will come by. And then there are the happy Halloweeners who take great joy in handing out treats to all the ghosts, goblins, and superheroes who come along.

Assuming you are one of the happy Halloweeners, you may be wondering what you could do this year instead of handing out candy. Kids love candy that's for sure, but we all know they will most likely end up with more sweets than they know what to do with.

So with that in mind, here are five really cool alternatives to passing out Halloween candy. I'm not saying it's going to be cheap, but neither is candy, and you could be the coolest trick-or-treat stop in Grand Junction.

    FREEZE POPS

    ThinkStock

Kids love freeze pops. Drop one of these delicious treats in their bag and they'll be as happy as a bat in a damp, dark cave. When they get home they can stick it in the freezer and the next day they'll have a yummy snack for after school.

    HALLOWEEN PENCILS

Who says a Haloween treat has to be edible? A regular pencil is boring, but with a scary Halloween pencil, the kids will be anxious to take it to school and be the envy of their classmates.

    BOUNCY BALLS

    ThinkStock

One toy that has never gone out of style is a rubber, bouncy ball. There is something thrilling and completely satisfying about playing with a bouncy ball. It's not about how far you can throw it, it's all about how high will it go, and can you catch it when it comes down.

    CRAZY STRAWS

    ThinkStock

It doesn't take a lot to thrill a child and crazy straws are one of a kid's simple pleasures. They aren't terribly expensive, however, a parent might have some concerns if they aren't individually factory packaged.

    Halloween Oranges

    ThinkStock

How about some oranges,  tangerines, cuties, or clementines? Draw smiley faces on each one with a black marker, or go all out and make each one look like a miniature jack-o-lantern. It will look cool, and taste great - and is more healthy than a candy bar.
